Walking & Hiking

Hiking

The region is full of adventure and wonder for walkers, with 250 km of hiking and walking trails and a network of paths running from the orchards in the valley up to the high alps. In the summer months as well as winter, several ski lifts remain open allowing you to reach the summits and make the most of your hiking.

Hiking here is not just for adults.  The kids can follow Max and Didonk along the geographical trail treasure hunt and discover the animals of the mountains.

The Bisses Country

Our surrounding area contains 98km of hikes along "8 bisses" of which 6 have water flowing within their banks.

The Historic Nendaz Water Trail/Les Bisses are the largest in Europe. They derived from the peasants' determination to escape the consequences of drought and artificially diverted the water to their crops by irragational channels dug into the ground, carved into or suspended from the rock face.

Running alongside the bisses are paths suitable for families and casual hikers which will take you through the valleys, villages and mountains with spectacular scenery.

Bisse Vieux 1658 - 7km

This trail runs through a spruce tree forest where stags and deers dwell and little waterfalls can be seen along the way.  You can pick up the trail from Nendaz above the gondola.

Bisse du Milieu 1700 - 5km

This pleasant trail meanders through to the inner valley towards Planchouet and Lavantier. Along the way you can take in the Chapel of Bleusy and the Chapel of Planchouet.

Bisse de Saxon 1865 - 32km

This is the longest Bisse in the Valais region and was it was abandoned in 1966, however 25 years later it was reopened and now walkers can once again enjoy views such as the alpine meadow of Pra da Dzeu, the Guardians Cabin (Borlia) and one hundred year old larches.

Bisse d'en Bas Pre 1753 - 6km

This is the lowest Bisse on left bank of the Printse. As it is one of the less frequented Bisse it has the wildest nature therefore is a sight to behold. Walkers can combine this route with the Bisse Milieu and Bisse Vieux for a bigger circuit.

This is the highest and most spectacular Bisse with its high mountain promenade to Thyon. The long climb can be avoided by the Novelly chair lift if needed.  This Bisse incorporates spectacular views of both the Dam of Cleuson and the Rhone Valley with especially interesting flora in June and July

Grand Bisse de Vex 1453 - 12km

This is the largest Bisse and can be joined by walking along Bisse Milieu, Bisse Vieux or Bisse d'en Bas. It runs from Nendaz to Veysonnaz.

Bisse de Salins 1435 - 12km

The Bisse de Salins is the oldest Bisse in the community and features the dry meadows of Clebes and Ojinste.

Bisse de Baar (before 1456) 6km

This is the lowest Bisse on the right bank of the Printse.and is spectacular in spring with its blossoming apricot orchards. The apricots that grow there can be purchased from   the Baar (Kiosk)

To aid walkers and hikers there is a Bisse shuttle which runs to Veysonnaz or Siviez so you can return to Nendaz on foot.
